The Ministry of Home Affairs in India’s government has decided to install biometric logical access controls on all its computers and has invited bids from companies to install 100 devices to accomplish this, according to an Express India article. While the primary purpose of installing the new technology is to stop unauthorized access to the agency’s computer systems, it is expected to record usage data of each authorized user as well.
A technical evaluation committee (TEC) has been formed within the agency to oversee the bidding process which includes specifications such as the technology being operable in temperatures between 10 and 50 degrees Celsius, humidity up to 90%, verification times less than one second and powered by the computer.
Additionally, the TEC has outlined what kind of company they will accept bids from specifying a need for companies with experience with biometric access control technology built for use with computers and companies experienced in working with major governments, public and private sector companies. All bidders are expected to have their bids in prior to July 26 and be prepared to demonstrate their technology for the TEC.
