Alternatives to password overload rely on visual technologies

No doubt about it … passwords are a pain. But as the market becomes saturated with high-tech authentication methods and technologies, some are finding a niche modernizing simple ideas to heighten both security and ease of use.

Case in point: GrIDsure and Confident Technologies. The focus for both companies is to secure authentication to services using visual techniques such as pictures and patterns. These image-based technologies function across platforms and devices providing a simplistic, memorable replacement to passwords and PINs.

DigitalPersona announces new enterprise version release

DigitalPersona announced the release of a new version of its Pro Enterprise software solution, version 5.2.

Among the aspects of the new version DigitalPersona is touting are the extensive number of factors a company utilizing the solution can use to authenticate for access to sensitive information or secured computer stations. These factors include what a user knows, such as PINs or passwords, things you have, such as smart cards, contactless identity cards or Bluetooth devices, and things you are, such as fingerprints.

CSC, Daon partner for banking multifactor authentication product

CSC has partnered with identity authentication technology and services provider Daon to produce a biometric multifactor authentication service for the banking industry. The product, called ConfidentID Mobile, provides in and out-of-band identity authentication for transactions in multiple channels, including online and mobile.

DigitalPersona adds facial recognition to authentication software

DigitalPersona Inc. released a new version of its DigitalPersona Pro Enterprise software that includes facial recognition as a method for authentication.

Facial recognition can now be combined with fingerprint biometrics, passwords, PINs, proximity cards, smart cards and OATH tokens for a multi-factor authentication solution. Policy creation and enforcement works through a client’s existing Active Directory infrastructure.

DARPA recommends ditching passwords, using always-on biometrics

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is recommending the elimination of password usage in favor of biometrical recognition, reports Government Computer News.

DARPA said on its Active Authentication site that complex passwords are too cumbersome to create, remember and manage, nor do active sessions have the capability to recognize whether the current user is the one who was originally authenticated.
